How to Forget Fear →
psychotherapy: Imagine if you could rewrite your mind as quickly as a document on your computer. No more painful memories, no phobias or ingrained fears, just a blank slate where the scars that mark each human life used to be. This may sound like the stuff of Hollywood fantasy but last month it came a step closer to reality at New York University. By manipulating memory a research team managed...

poem:
janumary: I do all right alone and better together. But I do very poorly when semi-together. In solitude I do much. In love, I do more. But in doubt I only transfer pain to paper in gigantic Passion Plays complete with miracles and martyrs and crusifictions and resurrections. Come to stay or stay away. This series of passions plays is becoming a heavy cross to bear. -Peter McWilliams

“Everyone has three lives: a public life, a private life, and a secret life.”
– Gabriel García Márquez (via) (via sedna) (via melissa) I keep a private-ish blog that very few people know about.  Over time, my comfort level with this public blog has grown, so I’ve just started transferring a number of posts from there to here.  Perhaps this means I feel more okay letting...

What You Don't Know Makes You Nervous →
jingc: People feel worse when something bad might occur than when something bad will occur. Most of us aren’t losing sleep and sucking down Marlboros because the Dow is going to fall another thousand points, but because we don’t know whether it will fall or not — and human beings find uncertainty more painful than the things they’re uncertain about. Why would we prefer to know the worst than...

Isn't it ironic..
dihard: Isn’t it a little ironic that the same law that the Democrats changed in 2004 is what lost them the Massachusetts Senate seat in such a dire time? (The Democrats, fearing Mitt Romney would appoint a Republican Senator if Kerry were to win the presidential election and vacate his Senate seat in 2004, submitted a bill to change the law to require a special election within 145-160 days...

Don't Leave China Google! My Suggestions for...
culturalbytes: Google announced on its company blog that Chinese hackers had attacked its users and as a result Google.CN may leave China due to the security breaches. While unfortunate that Google.CN may be shutting down, my ethnographic work in China revealed five things that aren’t being told in the current story: Many Chinese internet users don’t find Google to be very useful....
